In brief

S.B.A.C. Senior Secondary School wants to create further opportunities for young people locally and working with the communities, surrounding villages and areas ensuring access to structured sport programmes for boys and for girls – using mainly football and netball in conjunction with life skill sessions.

UPDATE: Due to the closure of the school in 2020 the Sehyog Sports Development and Women Empowerment Trust took over the programme in 2021.

Problem to be tackled

Less opportunities for young people especially girls of reasonable and sustainable recreational activities; girls’ wellbeing, gender equality, access to sports and life skills and hygiene.

Local partner

S.B.A.C. Senior Secondary School as implementer of the Sports Development Project follows the main goal: making awareness of gender equality and access to sports in particular football of critical importance for girls in India.

The activities include inter alia education for girls in specific sports diet namely to benefit from a good diet and to support their physical fitness to play football or netball, additional and proper sports equipment, organisation of tournaments, practice, drills and life skills sessions – all in a safe environment.

Beneficiaries

S.B.A.C. Senior Secondary School is involved with the welfare of the poorest and most underprivileged children in the community, the school children are from very poor backgrounds. Additionally, slum children from surrounding areas are involved in the programme.

SOL’s contribution

With the support of The SOL Foundation, S.B.A.C. Senior Secondary School will be able to upgrade and improve the dedicated and sustainable Sports Development Project which has started in conjunction with The SOL Foundation back in 2018. In addition to the existing football element the new programme includes netball and life skill sessions.

Project partner

S.B.A.C. Senior Secondary School, based in Punjab, India, has been established in 1889 at a time when the educational institutions in the rural villages were very few. The school has helped many children of underprivileged sections of the society and given them a good start in life. From all students attending often 80% come from poor backgrounds. The ratio between boys and girls is around 50:50.
